Most new fans will only associate the Anaheim Angels with their current red jerseys, as they have been using it for a decade now. But the truth is that the team has gone through quite a few uniform changes since the 1970s, ranging from decent to good (with a few flunkers mixed in). If you are looking for only the cream of the crop, here are what we believe to be the best jerseys worn by the Angels:
Regardless of aesthetics, this jersey is worthy of its spot in this list by virtue of its historic importance. It was the first uniform worn by the Anaheim Angels in an official capacity, back when they were still going by the name Los Angeles Angels. The jersey first saw action at the Wrigley Field minor league stadium in Los Angeles in 1961, and it marks the first year that the Angels had 5 players who had more than 20 homers.
This new uniform had significant changes in its design — the team name is now rendered in lower case and a halo has been added in order to hammer home the point that they are angels. They are already the Anaheim Angels at this point, and this is indicated in the star on the left sleeve. This uniform is the first one that had the player’s numbers indicated on the front.
This new home jersey uses the double-knit style that was very popular with the major league teams in the 70s and 80s. The uniform uses a stretchy, synthetic material with a pullover style and the pants did not need a belt, opting instead for an elasticized waistline. The logo is also different, with the letter “A” now capitalized and the halo placed on the tip, as opposed to hovering above the letter.
The 2002 jersey is notable because it brought back the “halo” design element after being gone for a few iterations of the jersey. The uniform was also memorable for many fans because started out real bad, but around May the team started to turn things around and won 21 out of their 24 games in order to get back to the race. For many fans, this jersey is associated with a period in the Anaheim Angels’ history that played out like a Hollywood underdog film, showcasing a struggling team triumphing over odds in the end.
